Is it OK for Christians to watch horror movies?
That right there is an interesting question. Let me say that my personal preference is to not watch them. There is no doubt that horror movies are rooted in the supernatural and the evil / demonic. Now we know that there is a supernatural side to life – in fact we are supernatural beings. The Bible speaks a lot about demons and Satanic influence. But would this be reading too much into horror movies?
Well first of all there will be the argument that not all horror movies are about demons and evil creatures. I think that this is incorrect. Movies that are high in suspense but which lack anything of the supernatural would be classified as thrillers or as suspense. It is in fact the addition of the evil that embodies people and objects and this is demonic in nature. So I know where my distaste for these movies comes from, and I would urge parents to take a close watch over what movies their children are watching, especially at the age of 13 or 14.
So what is the harm of watching these movies?
The harm is that we must not allow the devil a foothold. Ephesians 4:27. I know that the verse I have just quoted is in relation to unresolved anger, but the principle is the same. We must not allow the devil to gain any foothold in our lives. Terror and horror and the evil and sinful acts that go with these movies, like rape, murder and sadism are things that we should not look at, no matter what. 1 Thessalonians 5:22 says that we must abstain from every appearance of evil.
When we pray the Lords’ Prayer we pray that God will deliver us from evil. Jesus himself taught us to pray this way. Why would Jesus teach us to pray for God to deliver us from evil if he is quite happy on the other hand for us to watch evil as a form of entertainment? It makes no sense. It is nonsense.
An article on onechristianminsitry says this:
“Due to demonic power attached to horror movies, the long term results of horror movies can create long bondage & strongholds to the enemy. People can have evil, perverse, abominable thinking, disturbing ideas, sick images, warped memories, and evil thinking about others in their brain throughout their life, due to the traumatic wickedness that was sown into their brain through the participation in horror movies”.
I am not sure if this is over-reaction or if I am not personally too tolerant. One thing I do know is the Bible tells us:
Whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. Philippians 4:8
