Continuing from yesterday…
2 Peter 1: 3 His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness
Yesterday i looked at the fact that we already have been given everything we need by God, in order to live a godly life. That means we have the power to overcome temptation, and we have the power to do good, and to serve God. It doesn’t matter what circumstances there are in our lives, we already have what we need. The deposit has been placed into our spiritual account by the living God.
Today the question is how do we get our hands on those things? The secret is … “through knowledge of him”
People underestimate the power of knowledge about God. When you start to learn about and understand the things God has given and about his nature, you will start to understand the tools you have and how to use them. The way we use the gifts and talents God has given is through knowledge of God. Knowledge comes from the Word. God has revealed himself to all men through the Word (Bible). By reading the Bible we get to learn about God first hand. The word first hand here is also important. Many Christians read daily devotions and rarely read the Bible. That is not good enough!
Other Christians listen to sermons via podcast and they download sermons or listen online or even on TV. Whilst this is not bad, it is not good enough. The problem with daily devotions and TV is that the knowledge we gain is someone else’s knowledge. Imagine if you (a man) heard about this amazing girl, who had the most incredible personality, was so good looking, had a great sense of humour, was stylish, was confident etc etc etc. The list goes on and on. Everyone in your circle tells you about her, but you have never met her. You may know a lot about her, but you don’t know her.
When Peter says we get these things for a godly life through knowledge of him, it means first hand knowledge. You need to know God, rather than knowing about him. The things other people tell you is stuff about God they have come to learn. But you need your own knowledge. You need to read the Bible for yourself, talk to God yourself and hear from God yourself. It is really not complicated because God enables us to gain this understanding when we read the Bible through the third person of the godhead, namely the Holy Spirit. He is there to help you understand what is written in scripture.
So God has already given us everything we need, but those things are useless to us until we get the firsthand knowledge of who God is, through a personal experience of him daily.
God bless you.
