Wrestling with God

Which word/ phrase best describes your Christian walk?

  1. A walk in the park
  2. Easy
  3. Problem free
  4. Impossible
  5. A bit of a struggle

Most people if they were honest would say 5 – a bit of a struggle!

Lets be honest. The Christian walk is a struggle. It’s hard. It’s tough. In fact while we are speaking candidly here, let’s all agree that “Life is tough!”

It’s a true saying.

We have to work for everything and we have to work at everything. Very little comes easy, and unless you were born with a silver spoon in your mouth, everything is a bit of a grind.

Good relationships are tough and not many people have learned the secret of really great relationships with everyone they know. there is always a father, a mother, a friend, a colleague a boos – a somebody, who we struggle with. How are these relationships in your family?

  • Brothers and sisters
  • Husband and wife
  • Father and son

Having God in your life does not make these things easy. But it is easier to walk through problems when you have someone walking with you. I think that if God was going to simply bless everything we do, and make us all rich and problem free, then people would run to God because of the comforts he can give them. God is not here to simply make you comfortable.

1 Peter 5:10 says

And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.

God will not leave you struggling forever!

Why is it that we struggle so?

  • We are flesh and spirit – two parts rolled into one person.
  • The nature of our flesh is it is at war with God
  • Our life will only be in balance when our God compartment – is at a level where it carries us towards God and not away from him

Everything you and I do, takes us in a direction – either towards God or away from him. Nothing is neutral.

Think of it as a tug of war. We are the flag in the middle of the rope, with God / Holy Spirit pulling one way and the devil pulling us in another way. When we get pulled in the direction of the devil, our spirit man is unhappy and unfulfilled. We feel the disappointment of God. Something feels hollow! That’s because our spirit man is only satisfied by the things of God. God’s love is what fulfils us.

When we get pulled in the direction of God, our flesh man is unhappy and unfulfilled. We feel the sting of Satan who pulls even harder against us. He tries to make us feel like we are missing out. That’s because our flesh man is only satisfied by the things of the world. But things do not fulfil us.

As long as we live, we are destined to wrestle.

I want to look over the next few days at wrestling with God

We would love to hear what you have to say
