There is one book of the Bible that is really quite erotic. It is the song of Solomon. The book is a collection of love poems from Solomon to his lover, but it is clearly inspired by God and is clearly a reference of God and His people.
God loves passionately. Many people have wondered why this book is in the Bible. After all the word God is not mentioned once in the entire book. But the book has stood the test of time over the centuries, and the Bible tells us that every word in it is inspired by God Himself.
Song of Solomon 1
2-3 Kiss me—full on the mouth!
Yes! For your love is better than wine,
headier than your aromatic oils.
The syllables of your name murmur like a meadow brook.
No wonder everyone loves to say your name!
4 Take me away with you! Let’s run off together!
An elopement with my King-Lover!
We’ll celebrate, we’ll sing,
we’ll make great music.
Yes! For your love is better than vintage wine.
Everyone loves you—of course!
Did you know that God loves you like that? Do you realise that the Song of Solomon is God’s love story with you? It is! God is represented by the King-Lover, who woos his lover. You and me are the object of God’s affection. This should not make you uncomfortable, this should make you rejoice. It really makes God a lot more human and understandable than perhaps many think. After all, Jesus became flesh and dwelt among us. God knows what it is like to walk the earth in human form and to experience all the emotions and temptations that we do.
God is always interested in your life, and He cares about what you do and what happens to you. But He is more interested in your character than your comfort. Imagine if God was just what we want Him to be many times – just there to give us what we want and to smooth things out when we mess up? Life would be a disaster. We would only turn to God when we need Him. That is not what Love is about.
When you have a love affair with your husband or wife, i is passionate and wonderful and amazing and full of passion. That is God. That is the relationship He wants with you. When you are so madly in love, all you want is to spend time together, to speak on the phone when apart, and you count down the minutes until you see each other again.
God loves you that way and He wants you to love Him back the same way.
