Sometimes you have to just keep yourself pure. My teenagers tell me the world we live in is completely different from the one I used to live in. They must be really clever to know what it was like in “our day”. I think they are right in a sense but in another sense, things do not really change. The pressure to drink excessively, smoke, carouse and generally party hard has always been there. The thing is how do you handle it?
Daniel 1 v 8 But Daniel resolved that he would not defile himself with the king’s food, or with the wine that he drank. Therefore he asked the chief of the eunuchs to allow him not to defile himself.
My daughter is one who generally does not give in to peer pressure. She does not care what people think about her and she is very strong. She has never smoked and I doubt she ever will, but she does like alcohol, probably more than we would like her to. I see some people reading this and saying to themselves “you see these Christians are all so fuddy-duddy and boring. They just want you to have no fun!” This is not what it’s about.
Daniel is in a place where he is virtually forced to drink wine that he does want to drink and to eat foods he does not want to drink. In fact by not doing these things he is going against the express command of the king.
But Daniel decides to serve God no matter what. he refuses to give in to the pressure. You see it can be done. Once he made that decision, God really came through for him.
The lesson is this: do not let people pressure you into doing things you do not want to do. Call on the name of God, stand strong and wait for His deliverance.
