The obvious answer to the question “Do good people go to heaven?” is Yes of course they do. That would be wrong. Good people who are defined by the way they live will not go to heaven. The only way anyone gets to heaven is through the forgiveness of sin, by faith in Jesus Christ.
Luke 18 v 18 And a ruler asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 19 And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone. 20 You know the commandments:‘Do not commit adultery, Do not murder, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honor your father and mother.’” 21 And he said, “All these I have kept from my youth.” 22 When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “One thing you still lack. Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will havetreasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” 23 But when he heard these things, he became very sad, for he was extremely rich.
This young man had kept all these commandments perfectly. He lived a very good, moral life. But Jesus told Him that he was still lacking in something. The problem is that if we keep 99,999% of the law (that means we live a virtually flawless life in word, deed and motive), that is not enough to get you into heaven. Only perfect people are allowed in heaven, and anyone who has received Christ is prefect in the eyes of God. The reason for this is that God sees Jesus in us, and He no longer sees our sin. The Bible says that God has removed our sin as far as the east is from the west.
People who live good, moral lives are often the ones who least feel a need of Jesus, because they live such good upright lives. But no-one can be perfect. Remember Jesus said that if we even look lustfully at a woman, we have committed adultery with her in God’s eyes. If we get very angry with someone, we have as good as murdered them in God’s eyes. God weighs our motives, and even good people do good things sometimes out of wrong motives. That is sin according to the Bible.
No human can live and reach the standard Go requires. It is for this reason God set Jesus so that we can get back to God and ultimately get to heaven.
