The tongue is one of the small organs in the body, but it is one of the most difficult to control. The Bible agrees (see James). I think that is because the tongue and the eyes are controlled by our emotions. Our emotions dictate what we look at (lust after), and our tongues speak the things that are in our mind, based on how we are thinking.
- Kids are cruel
I have seen through having my own children just how ruthless kids can be with one another. And this starts at age 3 or 4, not at age 13. Even in kindergarten, small kids will take away someone else’s toy, lash out at someone for doing something they don’t like etc. And this is not because they are mimicking their parents or what they see at home.
Did you know that in Proverbs 6:16-19 in the Bible, there is a section that speaks about the seven things God hates? And would you be surprised that gossip is on that list. Of all the sins that could be listed in the world, speaking about someone else badly is one of the worst in God’s eyes. And we all do it to some extent. I have seen movies like Gossip girl, and the typical teen movie always seems to have the group of really cool (usually good looking girls), led by the queen “b”. They go around as if they own the place and they ride rough-shod over all the others, especially the not-so-cool kids. Is this what really happens? I think it does! But the thing that the group does that is most hurtful are the rumours and lies that they spread about these other kids. In other words gossip.
God just hates it when we do that! We need to control the tongue, because it is like the rudder of a ship steering the massive vessel. Our tongues determine the course of our life James 3:1-4. There is power in our speech and the words we say. Most personal development gurus will tell you that you must speak out positive things aloud. And you must constantly train your mind to be positive and declare positive things.
Have you ever heard it said that the tongue is the last member of the body to be saved? That could be a very true statement. If you are a young person and you have been part of spreading rumours, picking on people, cyber-bullying etc, then ask God to help you end that behaviour. The power of life or death is in the tongue, so choose life. Proverbs 18:21
