Sin does not pay!
No matter how tempting sin may be, and no matter how great God’s grace is to you (which it is), the consequences of sin cannot be swept away under the carpet. Many who come to saving faith in Jesus, learn about the grace of God. God’s grace abounds and is far greater than our sin. Paul, says on numerous occasions that we must remember that grace is never an excuse to sin. If you ignore this vital piece of advice from God’s word, you may be like Adoni-bezek and find your thumbs and big toes cut off. (Not literally, but figuratively).
Judges 1 v 7 And Adoni-bezek said, “Seventy kings with their thumbs and their big toes cut off used to pick up scraps under my table. As I have done, so God has repaid me.” And they brought him to Jerusalem, and he died there
What I love about the start of Judges chapter 1, is the way the people inquired of God after Joshua had dies, as to who should lead them. The people understood from past experience that they have to get behind the person that is God’s choice, because if they don’t and they just do things their own way, there will always be bad consequences. So Judah and Simeon (brothers and partners in crime always to coin a phrase), go off and defeat their enemies, just as God has promised.
However, when they caught king Adoni-bezek they cut off his thumbs and his big toes. Why? What a crazy thing to do! Well the reason was simple. Adoni-bezek was an evil king who punished his enemies in exactly this way. In fact, he had previously conquered 70 kings, and on each occasion had cut off their thumbs and big toes, and then made them beg form scraps under his table. What a humiliating thing to do. But unfortunately for him, his sin eventually caught up with him and he suffered the same fate as his captives.
And that’s the thing. If you are a bully, you will one day get bullied. It is called the law of sowing and reaping. If you steal from people, you will eventually find people stealing from you. The reason is called “sin”. God just hates sin. He hates sin so much that he cannot bear to even look at anyone who has ever sinned. And so He sent His only Son, Jesus (God Himself), to die and shed his blood for the payment for our sins (anyone who believes on him). That is grace. God gives total forgiveness when we don’t deserve it.
So instead of sowing in sin, sow in righteousness. You were saved to do good works. This way you get to keep your thumbs and big toes.
God bless you.
