Have you ever wondered what your life would be if only…? Life and work and school is often very repetitive. The nature of life is seasonal. Every day the sun rises and in the evening the sun sets. Every few months the summer rolls around and all too soon, it is gone and the winter returns. We go to the office and we open up our computer, and we start on the same thing we did yesterday. We repeat the next day and the next and the next. Is this what life is all about? I hear so many people out there saying “I am so bored!”
How did we get this way? And how do we get past it? We need things to spice up our life. Married couples often get into a rut and one of them one day says “Is this what our marriage has come to? I am so bored”.
This is a really dangerous place to be for Christians. Satan is always on the prowl and looking for any weakness. Boredom is a great doorway for Satan because he has lots of ways to entertain us, none of them which lead to the Lord.
As usual, let’s have a look at what the Bible says:
Proverbs 19:15 “Laziness casts into a deep sleep, And an idle man will suffer hunger”
Boredom is that terrible space where you are just unmotivated and desperately seeking something to stimulate and entertain. It is in this mind-set that Satan will usually tempt married people with infidelity. So many couples who split up, say afterwards that it was no that they fell out of love with their spouse, but they simply got into a rut and became terribly bored. When Satan sees a Christian husband or wife in a state of boredom, it is the time he will stir up interest in someone else. You let your guard down and Satan steps right in. For younger people, one of the ways that Satan will tempt you is with pornography. This is so easily accessible these days through smartphones and the internet which we all use daily, that temptation is a push of a button away. Boredom will invite Satan to tempt you. Alternatively, Satan will use friends and acquaintances to introduce you to drugs and substances which can be abused. Often the start of the problem is boredom.
So what do we do about it? If we are bored then there is not much we can do about it is there? I mean is prayer really going to help? The answer to the question is this. The Lord comes to give us abundant life. His influence in our lives is to draw us to the Word. When we are entrenched in the work of the Lord, we seldom get bored, when it is done in the right spirit, and in the confines of a close walk with God. I am not saying people doing church work cannot get bored. Quite the opposite! But it is all about our interaction with the Spirit of God.
When you embrace what God has for you, he will lead you into a place where you can witness for him, and your life will never be boring. It may be volatile and tough, because there is much opposition to the gospel. But Jesus draws us into a beautiful relationship. When you read the Bible and see the beauty of God every day, your life is fulfilled, and boredom is dispelled.
